We tried the popular AI 3D tools with one question: on the free tier, can you turn a text description into a file you can download and print? Here's what we found.

The gap between "AI made a 3D model" and "I have a file I can print" is where most free tools stop. The most common pattern we hit: generation is genuinely free — sometimes without even creating an account — but the moment you click download, a subscribe wall appears. We saw this on Meshy, Sloyd, and Automatic3D. Others gate text-to-3D itself behind a paid plan, or make you wait in a long free-tier queue.
There's also a fidelity gap: mesh-first generators optimize for how a model looks rendered, so a part described at 40 mm can export at an arbitrary default size, with a very high-poly mesh rather than clean, dimensioned geometry. For a decorative figure that's fine; for a functional part that needs to fit, it isn't.
